Certified Nursing Assistants take care of patients in hospitals, nursing homes and other related facilities. For performing these responsibilities and in order to become successful, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) must be dependable, responsible, have great communication skills, possess compassion and caring, be a good team player, and demonstrate good judgment skill.
There are five key behaviors that certified nurse assistant needs to demonstrate to become successful.
Dependability and Responsibility
The first behavior is dependability and responsibility. Successful nursing assistants demonstrate dependability and responsibility by arriving on time for their scheduled shifts, being prepared for their shifts by having their entire supplies ready, never calling off on a scheduled shift, and completing all tasks assigned to them on time.
Building Rapport with Patients
A second behavior is building rapport with patients and their families which means demonstrating compassion and having good communication skills. When patients feel comfortable around their nurse, they are more likely to open up and share important information about how they are feeling which contributes to their treatment also.
Caring Attitude for Patients
The third behavior requires having a caring attitude which includes being sympathetic towards the patient, understanding their fears and concerns, and being supportive. A caring attitude is also demonstrated through a sense of respect for patients, good communication with them, ensuring their comfort and safety, and by going above-and-beyond what is typically expected from an assistant in order to provide excellent service.
Patience is a Great Virtue
A successful CNA should have high level of patience. Patience can be defined as the ability to settle down and wait for something. The ability to work with people who are suffering from a variety of diseases and injuries, such as Alzheimer’s disease or other types of mental disabilities can often times take a very high level of patience. For example, individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease may get very agitated and often times frustrated with their situation. CNAs must recognize the fact that these emotions are part of the disease and must be dealt with accordingly. A successful nursing assistant should use patience at all times when dealing with patients of all kinds.
Good Judgment Skill
The final behavior that a successful CNA should possess is the ability to demonstrate good judgment. Good judgment is important for all nurses, but it is especially important for certified nursing assistants. A CNA who makes good judgments while at work will be able to respond quickly and appropriately during emergency situations. It is also one of the key behaviors that employers look for when hiring CNAs. One example of good judgment applies in a situation where a patient is having a seizure. The nursing assistant must take proper action to ensure the safety of the patient and others in the room, while also keeping in mind that they are caring for someone who needs help.
Successful CNA’s demonstrate above five key behaviors. In addition to above, They are also expected to be willing to learn, show courtesy and respect with coworkers and patients alike, follow instructions with little supervision, physically demand a great deal of energy from the person they are caring for, and have empathy toward people with many different needs.
